Barndominiums

A new word in the home building industry has been thrown around a lot here lately: barndominium. It seems that this concept originally became popular with folks out in Texas, but has really spread to rural areas all around the country. What started as a convenient idea for those wishing to seek an alternative build style has become a housing craze.

That is great and all, but what exactly is a barndominium? A lot of difference of opinion here. Truly, a barndominium is a metal building meant to serve as a permanent residence. However, the original idea was a combined space for living, working, and play. A lot of folks use the large, expansive spaces of a metal building to have large shops for their boats, trucks, or their mud-riding toys. I have heard of others wanting to use it as a stable area in which the stable and home are built into one. Though I imagine that your imagination is the limit when it comes to what feature you wanted to include in your home. Want a full auto shop right outside your bedroom? What about a large wood working shop so that you could get all your tools out of the garage?

That is the general idea behind the Barndominium: a combined working and living space that could give you the home that you want with the flexibility you need. On top of that, a Bardominium can basically look like whatever you want on the inside while keeping that same rustic vibe on the exterior. After all, it is called a BARNdomnium for a reason. Though, do not think that you have to stick with the traditional or the rustic for your home. Industrial, modern, traditional, whatever. The interior of the home is totally up to you and your budget.

Building with metal instead of with traditional home materials definitely has it’s advantages. For one, metal homes typically take less time to build that the alternative. Obviously, metal is stronger than wood so the home should be more durable than one built with traditional materials. One of the big draws is the space in these homes. Metal buildings can have a bit more space to them than the alternative, and if you are going for that large spaced, industrial look then building with metal is just a must.

A lot of people really love the look of a large porch, covered by a metal awning. It definitely gives it that rural touch, and gives the resident a ton of outside space to work with. A great addition to a barndominium seeing as most are built in rural areas. Lots of people love to have that extra outdoor space for relaxing, or sometimes working, right from their home. Have a piece of land with a nice view? Just imagine sitting out on your big, open porch without a care in the world.
